Ask any woman in menopause. The body changes physically, and not necessarily in the way they want. During this season, a woman’s self-confidence can drop dramatically, bringing about bouts of depression or anxiety. Building self-esteem is critical during this season of a woman’s life.

Tips for Building Self-Esteem in Menopause

Building self-esteem during menopause is less about physical changes (though they are important) and more about a mental shift. You need to address all aspects of wellness (physical, mental, and spiritual), but if your mental health spirals, your self-esteem will drop.

Counseling can help you learn to appreciate and embrace where you are during menopause and the changes you might experience.

Eat Healthier Food to Balance Hormones

Certain foods disrupt hormonal balance. For example, ultra-processed foods, such as frozen pizza and potato chips, are often processed with chemicals, preservatives, and other ingredients that are not stellar for your health. Eating nutritious meals and snacks will help you maintain a healthier weight and reduce the effects of menopausal symptoms.

Shop for whole foods, such as lean poultry and beef, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, like nuts and seeds.

Weaponize Sleep to Combat Fatigue

Fatigue is a common menopausal symptom. Yet, many women during this time find it difficult to sleep due to hormonal shifts, night sweats, and heart palpitations. Although eating healthier foods, avoiding caffeine and alcohol, and exercising consistently can improve sleep, creating a nighttime routine can work as a cue to the mind that it is time to wind down. When you are exhausted, it is harder to regulate emotions and appetite.

Choose two to five tasks to trigger your mind that it is time for bed. For example, after dinner, consider taking a warm bath, brewing a cup of herbal tea, and reading a book.

Lower Stress with Relaxation Techniques

As estrogen dips, it becomes more difficult to manage stress like before. Panic attacks and heart palpitations are common, but scary symptoms that may make you want to isolate and avoid social events. Relaxation techniques are effective for building self-esteem because they help you manage chronic stress and stop panic attacks.

Consult with a counselor about a list of relaxation techniques you can try, such as deep breathing, stretching, yoga poses, and grounding methods like the 5-4-3-2-1 method.

Walk to Boost Mood

A brisk walk several days a week can make a difference in your menopause and depression symptoms. Aim for 150 minutes of activity a week, but if you are short on time, even brief walks of 10 minutes can ease symptoms. Try a 10-minute walk in the morning and 20 minutes of walking at lunchtime or in the evening, five days a week, to meet your goal.

As you make walking a consistent form of movement, you may want to consider other forms of exercise, like dancing, pickleball, and strength training.
